Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon finalists of the 2021 Best Mangrove, Marine Protected Area Awards

The unassuming leadership of Prieto Diaz town Mayor Benito Doma and the dedication of the local government unit to preserve and protect the mangroves as their friendly eco-tourism site is one of the four finalists for the 2021 El Mar Marine Protected Area Awards and got the Recognition provided by the Marine Protected Area Support Network.

Prieto Diaz is known for having the widest and largest mangrove sites in the entire Bicol region and continues to attract tourists providing livelihood to its residents.

It is leading in the preservation and protection of the mangrove area by initiating continuing information campaign, community organizing, research and development, livelihood development and promotion, monitoring and evaluation, policy formulation and law enforcement/political will.

The strategy is contained in the town’s master plan to manage the Mangrove Ecosystem Protected Area leading to livelihood opportunity, zero apprehension to informed citizenry, development of mangrove sites and propagation of seed production area, involvement of stakeholders and conserving and managing prudently of resources.

The Para El Mar MPA Awards and Recognition is a biennial event that aims to showcase the country’s best performing MPAs and provide a place for Philippine MPA champions to share their experiences and provide education to others.
