An alleged top leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) and another NPA fighter were shot dead by Army troops on Thursday in an encounter in Irosin, Sorsogon.
The firefight that lasted several minutes happened at Barangays Patag and Cawayan.
According to an interview with another media outfit, a spokesman of 22nd Infantry Battalion said Army troops launched an operation on the area after learning reports of NPA presence and encountered the rebel group in a firefight.
“There were about 40 of them, and after exchanged of gunfire, two rebels were killed, one was a certain alias Cenon and the other, alias Jay-R”, the Army officer said.
In another development, two more rebels surrendered, an alleged leader of Platoon 1, Larangan 2 of the Bicol Regional Party Committee.
The two alleged “surrenderees” were named alias Dexter and alias Bunso.
Seized from the fight scene were six (6) M16 assault rifles, which included the two rifles from the 2 slain rebels, three (3) anti-personnel mines (APM), and personnel belongings.
