Two Naga City citizens will be honored today on Bonifacio Day. The 2023 Annual Honoring of Martyrs and Heroes of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation has included among its six honorees the late Atty. Luis General Jr. and the late Atty. Jesus Antonio M. Carpio

Lawyers General and Carpio, both Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG-Bikol) lawyers, contributed to fighting tyranny and the dictatorship with their exemplary contributions as Bicolandia’s leading human rights lawyers.

Atty. Luis General Jr. was an esteemed veteran journalist for renowned local newspapers such as Naga Times, Balalong, and Handiong that tackled social issues in the region, exposed abuse, and stood up for freedom of the press.

Atty. Jesus Carpio was the leading figure in Bicol’s movement for societal change and in fighting for the rights of the victims and families involved in the Daet Massacre of 1981. This led to his subsequent unlawful arrest and detention.

This year’s ceremony, happening at the Wall of Remembrance, will also have former Vice President of the Philippines Atty. Leni Robredo as guest of honor.

Each year, the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation adds to its roster of names on the Wall of Remembrance of heroes and martyrs who fought the Marcos dictatorship. aiming to recognize, honor, and popularize the lives of these individuals so that they may serve as an inspiration to the present and future generations. Currently, there are 326 names on its roster.
