The first Bicol Pop-Culture & Arts Festival puts the spotlight on originals

A first-of-its-kind culture and arts festival is happening this Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the grounds of Naga City’s historic Museo ni Jesse Robredo!

Wag Magsawang Magmahal sa Sining at Kultura is a unique creative festival capping the National Arts Month 2023 celebration featuring the Mukna Collective of singer-songwriters and artists, Musika Publiko’s Bicol Pop, the Sangre De Naga Theater Company, Dennis Gonzaga and his latest book, “An Santero kan Santo Entierro,” the Naga City start-up community, and many more.

“Bicol Pop-Culture & Arts Festival 1.0 puts the spotlight on original works by Bicolanos for the local audience,” said award-winning Bicolano singer-songwriter Karl Ramirez. “It is a hyper-local initiative aimed at generating much-needed local support for local creatives.”

Karl Ramirez, together with Roger Palacio, leads Musika Publiko’s Bicol Pop initiative in the region.

“Usually, an event of this magnitude is organized by either a big production company or a government unit. Kaya mixed emotions kami dito sa unang Bicol Pop-Culture & Arts Festival—proud, grateful, and terrified,” adds Ramirez.

“We’re proud of it being an artist-led initiative. We are grateful for the support of all sectors inside and outside Naga City. And, terrified still of the logistical cost of mounting it. Mabuti nalang maraming mabubuting loob na nais sumuporta sa lokal na sining at kultura,” ends Ramirez.

Performing and sharing their stories on February 25 are the following artists, musicians, and groups: Dennis Gonzaga, Leftie, Sangre de Naga Theatre Company, Teatro de Sta Luisa, Tiano Lelis, Khryss Araas, Beam Gumalay, Karl Ramirez, Kilyab, Kunyan, Jeev Barrosa, MJ Imperial, Paul Bordado, Ched Valencia, Carmela Dizon, Mc & Tom, W4shington, Tee-Jay, and Kob of Tothapi.

The event is organized by the Bangraw Bicol Arts and Culture Network, Musika Publiko Bicol, Rise Above Pilipinas, Sangre De Naga Theater Company, the 416 Gallery, and the Mukna Collective in partnership with the Naga City Government, the NHCP Museo ni Jesse Robredo, with support from Cong. Gabby Bordado, JCJ Food Hub, Casa sa Baybay, and Kyle Lights & Sounds.

The event opens on the grounds at 1 p.m., and performances will continue until 9 p.m.
